ENPC MBA Specialization in "Enterprise Risk Management" in collaboration with MINES ParisTech

Paris, July 22, 2011

Over the last few years, some of the world’s events have shown the crucial importance for decision makers to effectively manage risk. Financial risks (such as those due to 2008 sub-primes crisis), technological risks (e.g., the 2010 BP oil spill), natural hazards (like those caused by the 2011 tsunami in Japan) have caused enormous damage to the global economy and the reputation of firms. Due to environmental, market and societal dynamics, companies and organizations have been facing increasing complexity in formulating strategies, implementing decisions and managing operations. Today’s executives and managers need to develop competencies and skills to manage, if not anticipate, the increasing number of threats and risky situations which they face.

Identifying business opportunities and taking risk are quite unavoidable when managing a company and trying to sustain its business in a rapidly changing world. As such, risk management has always been an integral part of a manager’s remit. However, managing the various types of risks, from a technology failure to a terrorism threat, and their potential corporate impact requires specific skills. The latter include managers’ ability to perceive weak signals, make sense of a certain situation and assess its associated risk.

In order to provide these skills to high potential professionals, the ENPC School of International Management has decided to introduce in its MBA program a new specialization track in “Enterprise Risk management”. It will be offered in cooperation with MINES ParisTech, which created 13 years ago the first research centre in France fully dedicated to risk and crisis management.

This specialization, which will start in September 2011, consists of a set of 6 modules, each consisting of 30 contact hours, covering different aspects of risk management. These include risk identification and assessment ; organization of risk management ; human and organizational matters; safety culture and organizational learning ; resilience, robustness and critical infrastructures ; corporate risk governance and insurance ; and a one-week study trip to China. All modules are mandatory and will comprise lectures and in-depth case studies’ analysis and discussion.

In the ENPC MBA curriculum, the “Enterprise Risk Management“ specialization modules are delivered once students have completed the required business and management foundation courses. The specialization represents 21 ECTS. However, in order to graduate, students choosing this specialization must take courses from the other study tracks of the ENPC MBA curriculum. They need to obtain a minimum of 54 ECTS and carry out a Professional Project on a theme related to “Enterprise Risk Management”.
